Maintenance Cost in the UK for Students

Overseas students who wish to apply for a UK student visa must demonstrate that they have
the financial resources necessary to cover their living expenses. This covers the price of your
first year of tuition as well as other expenses like lodging, meals, entertainment, etc. (known as
maintenance funds). You have two options for paying the required amount: either you may use
the money in your own bank account or you can use the account of your parents or other legal
guardians. Other than your parents, you are not permitted to utilize another relative’s bank
account.
The amount of money you must have on hand for yourself and any family members who may
be traveling with you is referred to as maintenance (funds). You must demonstrate that you
have the financial resources necessary to cover your living expenses in the UK and course fees.
You must receive 10 points for your maintenance as part of the Tier 4 visa application process
(funds). You must be able to show that you have access to funds sufficient to pay for your first
year’s tuition fees in addition to a sum sufficient to cover your living expenses.
According to UKVI, unless you have been in the UK with a valid visa for at least 12 months at the
time of your application, you must demonstrate that you have enough money to support
yourself. The amount of money you’ll require depends on where you’ll be attending university.
You’ll require one of the following:
 London courses cost £1,334 per month for a maximum of nine months.
 Courses outside of London cost £1,023 per month (for a maximum of nine months).
You must pay boarding costs if you are boarding at a residential independent school. Your CAS
will show how much you must pay.
Dependents (husband/wife/children) also need submit a visa application with enough money to
cover their living expenses in the UK. Up to a maximum of nine months, this would cost £680
for each month the visa would be valid. If the visa will be granted for 9 months or longer (9 x
£680), this amounts to a total of £6,120 per dependent.
